Trade-War Contagion Puts Markets on Alert for Fresh Risk Selloff

Investors may be about to get further confirmation that they have misread how deep and lasting the global trade war could be. After last week’s retreat in risk assets, the stand-off between the world’s two largest economies deepened at the weekend as Beijing  blamed  the U.S. for the latest breakdown in talks. Traders were also left digesting a move by the Chinese toward blacklisting FedEx  Corp., a threat by President Donald Trump to slap tariffs on all Mexican goods and a decision to  end an arrangement  that lets India export almost 2,000 products to the U.S. tax free. “Investors are generally of the view that the trade dispute could drag on for longer, but they appear to be overlooking its potential impact on the global macro outlook,” Chetan Ahya, the New York-based head of economics at Morgan Stanley, wrote in a note distributed Sunday. “If trade tensions continue to escalate, the global cycle will be at risk. We could end up in a recession in three quarters. As the outlook on tr

Columbia Sportswear Is Ready to Pass on Trump Tariffs to Consumers

Columbia Sportswear Co.  is feeling the pain from the U.S. trade war with China, and if the situation intensifies, Chief Executive Officer Tim Boyle says consumers will feel it too. The Trump administration’s latest tariff proposal on goods imported from China has forced the outdoor-gear and apparel maker to spend more time managing its supply chain than its sales operations, Boyle said in an interview on Bloomberg TV. The levies have also led him to put distribution projects on hold. We will pass on the prices if we have to,” Boyle said. “Again, this is a tax on commodities that American consumers are going to be consuming, so yes these taxes will be passed on.” The company had been  largely spared financial pain  in the initial rounds of tariffs. But the ongoing dispute has sucked up hours and resources it hadn’t planned for. Earlier this month, the U.S. proposed 25% tariffs on an additional $300 billion of goods from China, including apparel and footwear. Boyle said the company has

Zverev outlasts Jarry in thrilling final to clinch Geneva Open title

Germany's Alexander Zverev did his French Open preparations a world of good by beating Chile's Nicolas Jarry 6-3 3-6 7-6(8) in a difficult, rain-hit final at the Geneva Open on Sunday. Top seed Zverev, looking for his first title win on clay since clinching the Italian Open last year, had endured a disappointing season so far and had not won a title since the ATP Finals in London in November. The 22-year-old did not have it easy, taking two hours and 35 minutes to eventually get the better of his unseeded opponent in a match where both players had numerous match points. Two rain delays added to the drama. Zverev was not as his best with eight double faults punctuating his victory, five of which came in the final set, and he converted only one of 12 break points over the course of the match. Jarry, who beat Zverev in Barcelona on the same surface in a three-setter last month, fired six aces to Zverev's thre

CBN will continue to fight economic saboteurs, says Emefiele

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has declared that it would continue to use unconventional methods to revive the country’s economy and encourage local production.Part of the unconventional means would be to declare as “economic sabotage and cease accounts of individuals and companies” that engage in importation of 43 items already placed on restriction by the apex bank. This was the fulcrum of the Distinguished Leadership Lecture delivered by the Governor of the CBN, Dr Godwin Emefiele, at the International Conference Centre of the University of Ibadan (UI) yesterday. The lecture was titled, “Up Against the Tide: Nigeria’s Heterodox Monetary Policy and the Bretton Woods Consensus”.According to Emefiele, since it was obvious that the prevailing system in Nigeria makes those conventional theories of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and other international financial institutions to work, the CBN has to consider unconstitutional means to fight economic recession and
