Explosion in Egypt Injures 16 People Near Giza Pyramids

At least 16 people were injured when an explosive device targeted a tourist bus near the Giza pyramids in Egypt, said Hanaa Serour, an official at the Health Ministry. Some of the wounded were foreign nationals, according to Mohammed El-Saghir, head of police investigations in Giza’s al-Haram neighborhood. The blast occurred in front of a museum that’s under construction, and there was no immediate claim of responsibility. Militant groups in Egypt have repeatedly targeted tourists. In 2015, an Islamic State affiliate bombed a Russian airliner carrying holidaymakers from a Red Sea resort, killing all 224 people on board. Last December, three Vietnamese tourists and a local guide were killed by a roadside blast around the same area of greater Cairo as Sunday’s explosion.

Investors to Focus on Argentine Peso After Kirchner's VP Bid

Argentina’s peso, the worst-performing emerging-market currency this year, could see more volatility as investors learn how to connect the latest pieces of the country’s complex political puzzle. In a surprise announcement on Saturday, former President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner said she would run as vice president in the country’s upcoming elections. She’ll be on the same ticket as Alberto Fernandez, a veteran politician and former cabinet chief who is aligned with a moderate wing of the influential Peronist movement. Analysts are now trying to determine whether the pair will be able to beat President Mauricio Macri, who is running for re-election and is seen as more market friendly. Kirchner is a vocal critic of the billions of dollars in debt Argentina has accrued in the last three years, much of which is owned to the International Monetary Fund. So far this year, the peso has slumped by about 16% against the U

Swiss Vote To Tighten Gun Laws, Safeguard EU Relations

The Swiss voted Sunday to toughen their gun laws and bring them in line with EU legislation, heeding warnings that rejecting the move could have threatened relations with the bloc, early results showed. Exit polls and preliminary results released shortly after polls closed at noon (1000 GMT) indicated that voters overwhelmingly supported reforming Swiss gun laws. According to projections by the GFS.Bern polling institute, the reform received 66-per cent backing in Sunday’s referendum. A demand from the neighboring European Union that the Swiss toughen their gun laws has prompted a rare national debate over firearm ownership in the wealthy Alpine nation, which has a deeply-rooted gun culture. Saudi Arabia Calls For Urgent Arab Talks Over Iran Tensions

Saudi Arabia has called for emergency regional talks to discuss mounting Gulf tensions, saying Sunday that it does not want war with Iran but is ready to defend itself. King Salman invited Gulf leaders and Arab League member states to two emergency summits in Mecca on May 30 to discuss recent “aggression and their consequences”, the kingdom’s official SPA news agency reported Saturday. The announcement came days after mysterious sabotage attacks against several tankers in highly sensitive Gulf waters and drone attacks on a crude pipeline by Iran-aligned Yemen rebels, which Riyadh claimed were carried out on Iranian orders. The United States has also deployed an aircraft carrier and bombers to the Gulf over alleged threats from Iran. Dariye’s pay rises to N171m in prison

The former Governor of Plateau State, Senator Joshua Dariye, continues to receive the N750, 000 salary and N13.5m monthly running cost from the National Assembly, 11 months after his conviction by a Federal Capital Territory High Court, CLARONET  can report. This implies that his total earnings have risen from N85.5m in November last year to N171.1m in May. The sum is separate from a severance package he is supposed to receive as an outgoing member of the National Assembly. The payment to the account of the convicted lawmaker has continued despite a lawsuit filed by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project before a Federal High Court in Lagos to “stop the Senate President Bukola Saraki from paying former Plateau State governor, Senator Joshua Dariye, N14.2 million monthly allowances while he serves out a 10-year prison sentence for corruption because such payment violates Nigerian law and international obligations.” Investigations showed that Dariye, who represents Plateau
